Your saves will still be there, but they will no longer update if you change anything. Bad flash memory saves are harder to detect. No idea how many writes the flash memory can handle. Assuming you have the skills and compatible flash memory chips I suppose you could change the flash, and possibly recover your save to the new chip, but a battery is relatively easy (basic soldering skills required only). It's easy to change batteries (and they last 30 some years easily), but difficult to change flash memory.

If it makes you feel better, the battery save is more robust long term.
